Land is surrounded by ocean. Usually, people use "ocean" and "sea" to mean the same thing.  But, in fact, there is a difference between sea and ocean. Seas are usually on the edge of the oceans, they are an accessary part of the oceans.  Oceans and seas together are called the Ocean.   Three fourths of the earth is covered by ocean. For example: in eastern Asia, the Japanese archipelago, Taiwan and the Philippines, divide the oceans and the seas.

ngs to China.  In ancient times, Taiwan and the mainland were linked together.  Later, due to crustal movement, the connecting land sank into the sea, forming the Taiwan Strait, and the island itself.  So, Taiwan is an inalienable part of China, both now and in the future.)separated= split up       appear, turn up , come out , arise

Taiwan belongs to China.  Fujian province is a coastal province of south eastern China.  Taiwan has been under the jurisdiction of Fujian province.  In ancient times, millions of years ago, Taiwan and the mainland were linked together = Taiwan and the mainland were one land.  Due to earth's crustal movement, Taiwan and the mainland were divided by waters, forming the strait known as the Taiwan Strait, and the island itself.  On a straight line distance, Taiwan is about 130 KM from Fujian.  So, Taiwan is an inalienable part of China because of its geological past. (= Taiwan and China share a common geological past.) =Taiwan and China both share a geological past.

(strait is sandwiched between two pieces of land, on both ends of a narrow passage connecting the two seas.As a result, people often call a strait, a "sea corridor", or "golden waterway.")(There are a total of more than 1000 channels (straits) in the world.   Only about 130 have shipping, and only about 40 are busy with traffic or are important.=In the world, there are more than one thousand channels, including about 40 which are famous for shipping.)

(The world's longest strait is the Mozambique Channel.  It is between Madagascar and the African continent.  It connects the north and south Indian ocean, and has a total length of 1670 KM.)(In our country (China), we have three main channels., the East China Sea and the South China Sea are connected by the Taiwan Strait, which has a total length of 380KM.The Bohai Sea and the Yellow Sea are connected by the Bohai Strait, which has a total length of 115 KM. The South China Sea and the Gulf of Tonkin (Beibu Gulf) are connected by the Qiongzhou Strait, which has a total length of 70 KM..)

Beibu Gulf =   Gulf of Tonkin                  qiongzhou=Ki-ungchow
The ocean is to the east, and the seas are to the west. Oceans are generally away from the mainland.  Most seas are part of the ocean near the mainland.   Some seas, though, are huge inland salt lakes inside the mainland, like the Caspian Sea.
Outside of land is the ocean with some islands.  Seas are much smaller in area than oceans.  The oceans are interconnected, forming an integral whole.  "The Ocean" represents all the salty water bodies in the world that are not inland, like the Caspian Sea.  Each ocean has it own subsidiaries of several seas.  There are a total of more than 60 seas around the world.  The Chinese mainland is on the edge of the Yellow Sea,  East China Sea, and the South China Sea - all belonging to the western edge of the Pacific Ocean.

  “江”的最初本义是指:长江,如同“河”是指黄河。江河的区别可从两个角度来看:比如中国南方的河流多称为“江”,例如:长江、珠江、钱塘江等等。北方的河流人们多称为“河”,例如:黄河、淮河、渭河等等。河是内陆里的河流,流向海。洋更大,它接收所有的海。全世界只有四个洋,按大小分别是:太平洋大西洋 印度洋 北冰洋.

"River": the first, original meaning refers to the Changjiang River.   "The river" also refers to the Yellow River.Rivers can be viewed from two perspectives:  the difference between north and south China.   Such as, southern China's river known as "Jiang."Like, the Yangtze river, Pearl River, the Qiantang river, etc.  Northern China's river, known as the "river".  For example: The Yellow River, Huaihe River, and the Weihe River, and so on.Rivers are inland, flowing into the sea.  The sea is bigger, it receives all the rivers that flow to the ocean.  The ocean is larger, it includes all the seas.There are only four oceans in the world, according to the size, respectively are: Pacific, Atlantic,Indian ,arctic.

Pond---Artificial digging on land, used for breeding aquatic and water storage devices used for irrigation.

(Note: "pond" may also refer a natural body of water which is smaller than a lake)

Pool---- Usually, a natural, small body of water.

Lake---- Usually, naturally occurring, it is bigger in scale than a pool or pond.

There are 5 great lakes in north America.
Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Ontario, Lake Superior and Lake Erie

Seas are the natural waters on the earth's surface.  They areas close to land are waters usually referred to as seas.  In scale, they are usually much larger than lakes.  (note there are also "inland seas" such as the Caspian Sea.  They are called "Seas" instead of lakes, because they are larger, and have salty water.

the natural waters of the earth's surface.  In scale they are bigger than the seas.  Water, far away from land, is called the ocean.

Artificial digging ditch belongs to small waterways, also called the ditch, the smallest.

Creek refers to the natural formation of the medium and small waterways, sometimes also called "streams" or "brooks" (brook is a small creek).   They are smaller than rivers.

Compare a river to a creek.  A river is usually much longer, and carries a bigger flow of water.

River and the river comparisons.  Some rivers, like the Changjiang, carry much more water, and are much longer than other rivers.   "The river" is used to mean the biggest river nearby.  Example: In Shanghai, they would call the Changjiang "the river".   In Zhengzhou, the Huang Ho is nearer than the Changjiang, so people there would call the Huang Ho, "the river".
