2013.10.19 Top Notch book (one to twenty pages)

Top notch   fundamentals    English for Today's world.

This hotel is really lovely, top notch (well trained) staff who make you feel welcome and are there to take care of you.

The sounds is top notch.    His work was top notch.      They all have a fundamental problem.

You made a fundamental mistake. very stupid.      In order to realize your dream you have to build up confidence.

He polished off his work in order to see his girlfriend. In order to attain( achieve, reach) our objective we must work hard.

In order to being an English teacher, I must study hard.

Listening, speaking, reading, then writing constitute the fundamental order in language learning.

contents= what is in something.      My coffee cup contains coffee.   The contents of my coffee cup is coffee.

01---unit 

I will tear (break )the book into three pieces.     explain again  I tore (broke)  the book into three pieces.  each piece is a unit.   now I will tear this unit into four pieces.  each piece is a lesson.      A book has some units. A unit has couple lessons. 

Top Notch, elementary parts include fourteen units, each unit has three lessons.
02---goals

compare goal to goals.

goal means something you want to get done with or to finish or to accomplish .   goals mean  more than one things you want to get done with or to finish or to accomplish.

03---includes

There are three lesson's included in this unit.  or Included in this unit are three lessons

04---Let's change roles.

Teacher:  pair work.  Ken and Emma are a pair, please make up a dialogue and then act it out.

Emma: Hi, I am Emma.

Ken: Hi, Emma. I am Ken.

Emma: Nice to meet you,Ken.

Ken: Nice to meet you, too.

Teacher: Now, change roles, Emma and Ken.

Ken: Hi, I am Ken.

Emma: Hi, Ken. I am Emma.

Ken: Nice to meet  you, Emma.

Emma: Nice to meet you, too.

05---rhythm    gesticulation--gestures   intonation    tone     cadence     fluidly  accent

You chat with friends but your friends talk about some topic which you don't like. you are very clever. your thoughts can move quickly and fluidly form one topic to another.   He has a strong American accent.   I speak with a slight hometown accent.   How is your accent in english?   The chinese girl spoke English with hardly any accent.

Cadence means the rise and fall of the voice in reading with rhythm.        His words come out with a beautiful cadence.  How is your working cadence? Can you quickly suit the new environment.  You speak fluently.   You speak fluidly.   You speak English with rhythm and intonation very well. You are  like a native speaker.

She speaks fluent English .   Fluent: about to speak a language very well.   fluidly means smoothly, not fluently.

The essentials of humanistic language include talk, intonation ( tone) , facial expression and gesture.

When we talk on the phone, I can tell ( I will know) if you are happy or sad by the tone (intonation) of your voice.  

You can tell( You will know) if someone is happy, sad or angry by the expression on their face(facial expression)

06---occupation       profession     areer          job

What is your profession?   Harper was a teacher by profession.   His profession is diplomacy.  what profession?

I respect you, I respect your profession. 

07---listening comprehension           listening understanding

If a student continues this exercise over two to three months their listening comprehension skills will greatly improve.

We are going to do listening comprehension practice.  Many students find it hard to do well in listening comprehension.

I stuck to a strict schedule and practiced my listening comprehension for hours every day.

Listening comprehension is an important element of the second language acquisition.

08---singular    plural       odd numbers      even numbers

1,3,5,7, etc. are odd numbers      2,4, 6,,48 , etc. are even numbers.       One thing is singular.  two or more are plural. 

09---noun             person, place or thing=noun            noun include count noun, non-count noun and  proper noun.

For example: The dog slept.    That is John.   This is the Alton police station.   Go there on Monday.  I like pumpkins.  

count noun= dog, pen, house....      non-count noun= water, milk, money, tea, sand....     proper noun= The United State, Beijin....

10---Affirmative and negative statements         Affirmative=positive

An affirmative word that you agree with what someone has said or that the answer to a question is "yes". 

A negative reply or decision indicates the answer "no".

11---you can find  a little yellow note and a small green note at the bottom right

12---Contractions

A contraction is a shortened form of a word or words.

for example: "It's" (with and an apostrophe) can be used as a contraction for "it is."

Its another layer of meaning.     ---------muscle contraction              The contractions were getting stronger.

13---pair work, group work

This group will divide into 3 pairs. You and Mr.Y  are a pair. make up a dialogue and then act it out.   I am=I'm.  She is =She's

Group work should be a team of three people or more.   pair work is partner work, two people in general.

14---Articles        
One of those article was mine. 
Fill in the blanks with articles where (it is) necessary.   Always add the appropriate articles in front of the noun. 
There are in English two articles: the definite article and the in-definite article.
Articles can be classified into definite articles and indefinite articles.
15---definite articles            
the= that ,this
16---indefinite articles
a, an= one             Put a in front of consonant.   a teacher.              Put an in front of vowel.  an architect
17---conversation=talk
He burst in upon our conversation.     If they learn of it , they will talk. 
18---guide = example = model sentence.
I am your guide and translator. 
 

1-----Do you know which nouns "get "a" and which nouns get "an"?    

The nouns that start with vowel letters, they usually get "an"
These are the vowel letters {a, e,i, o, u, ]            umbrella   egg    orange    apple       an interesting girl.  an interesting book.

2----affirmative= positive           negative

She asked me if I was ready. I answered in the affirmative.       I have got used on such life.

the parting from his sister had a positive effect on John.    Be positive about your future and get on with living a normal life.

But not all the news is so positive. 

Sixty persont of people answered negatively. The Council answered those questions in the negative

3----Recognize = identify      identify = know

The receptionist recognized him at once.   I recognize my own shortcomings.  Identify where you want to be. 

4---subject pronoun=I, you, he, she, we, you, they

5---every session= every time .  

Today was our second session of teaching or learning english.  next session = mean the next time that I will teach you.  

Content is unique for every session. I am a big admirer of all to them and I learn thing from them in every session

Every year, almost every session, adds a new volume. 

 Previous session = the previous time that I was teaching.     They recall your previous sessions information.

6---proper noun = special noun.  

Proper nouns usually don't have any meanings. They are just names without any meaning

for example: China , Alex , Jennifer, New York.  
But common nouns have some meanings: for example: Car, doctor, girl, house, cat.
7---Available for charters   
 Charter = rent = when you pay money to someone and use his car, or boat, or airplane
From there charter a small plane to drop you in a jungle settlement or beach vilage.
8---Licensed = to have official permission to own or use.
It's also a licensed produce, which means it costs money. 
official permission      You will have to get the official permission first. 
9---insured = protected
For example if my car is insured and if I have any accident then my government will pay the money of the accident.
The jewels were insued for $10,000. 
insured = government will pay money for it
10--- World language institute
institute = is a school for people who want to learn English language
There is a middle school attached to the institute. 
11--- porter =  a person whose job is to carry things 
Porter. please take my suitcase to the train.  Did you remember to tip the porter?
She called a porter to help her with the heavy luggage.   
12---her name is Lorraine Clare    It's a pleasure to meet you.  Paul Sato
13--- spelling bee = is a game       
a competition in which the winner is the person who spells the most words correctly
She won the spelling bee through hard work and determination.     But in every competition there can only be one winner. 
14---Form teams    make some groups        form = make      teams = groups     form = create
Athletes form teams that compete in a variety of sports. 
Compete only with yourself.      They decided to compete with us. 
Boarding taught me confidence, independence, how to survive and compete.
15---wrap up = last report of what you studied      wrap up = last summary of the unit you studied
What a great wrap-up speech,.    Wrap-up discussion. help design next year's contest. 
16---For the next session     complete page 5  and page 6
17---some are cross   and some are down           crossly = straightly
Some words are written "straightly" in the chart      and some words are written "up down" in the chart
This is written crossly.     This is written down.
Please draw the lines straightly.    I would express my idea towords things straightly.
In some places you can cross it on foot. 
18---Possessive adjectives and nouns.
We have two kinds of possessives.   Possessive adjectives    Possessive nouns
Subject pronouns are: I, you, he, she, it, we, they
Possessive adjectives are: My, your, his, her, its, our, their
19---a separate piece of paper
Write your name on a separate piece of paper
20---companion
She is a dependable companion.
She longs to be his companion through life. 
21---Famous People around the World

22--- Mr.    Mrs.      Miss.     Ms.
Ms. Single or married women                  Miss. = is usually used for single girls
Mrs. = is usually used for married women         Mr. is used for both single and married men

Keep it in your mind that we never use "titles" with first names .       We use titles with last names or full names

for example suppose my name : Salar Bagheri    If you say: Mr. Salar, it's incorrect     You should say: Mr. Bagheri
Or    Mr. Salar Bagheri
23---field
When I graduate I want to work in this field.  
24---expense
expense=price or amount of money. 
25---report
report = a written paper about something                  report = a piece of information an a paper
@ = at sign
26---two words = a pair      
like a pair of shoes            first name = is a pair    because there are two words
you put your stress on the first word.
27---locations and directions = places and addresses
28---Number the places. = the word "number" here is a verb and means "write number"
29---location : a particular place        particular = special
30---goal = purpose
31---direction = the way
32---name me some fruite = it means tell me some names of the fruits
33---wrap up = a short summary of the unit you studied
